“Remembering the gallant young men who were willing to leave their families and their homeland and put their lives on the line in the name of freedom”.
These words describe the reason the choir were honoured to attend this event on 22nd October. The occasion being the unveiling of a memorial to the American troops who trained in Pembrokeshire for the D-Day invasion of Europe.
A large gathering of VIPs, other guests, representatives of the three branches of our armed forces, members of the US military, Royal British Legion standard bearers and members of the public witnessed the unveiling by Ms Sara Edwards – Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, and its blessing by the Rt Revd Dr Joanna Penberthy – Bishop of St Davids. This followed by prayers led by local clergy; the laying of wreaths; an Act of Remembrance and two minutes silence.
The solemn event concluded with the singing of the national anthems of the USA, Wales and the UK led by a contingent of choristers from our choir who also gave a rendering of ‘An American Trilogy’ after the end of proceedings.
The event was sponsored by Valero Pembroke Refinery.
