CANADA 2018 – Join Us on Tour !!

One good thing leads to another…..
The South Wales Male Choir has been invited to take part in the International Choral Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River, 80 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. The festival, which is held bi-annually, selects a balance of children, youth and adult choirs from around the world. The South Wales Male Choir will be the first Welsh and only the second British choir to take part in this prestigious festival. Our invitation to take part followed a recommendation from the organisers of the Cornwall festival in which we participated last May.
The festival runs from the 3rd – 7th July 2018, and 18 concerts are presented. Choirs sing a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 concerts, in most cases sharing concerts with other participating choirs. Choirs also rehearse a common repertoire each day that is performed in the Gala Closing Concert.
Following the festival we will partake in a 6 day Kathaumixw Outreach tour. The areas covered by the tour are yet to be finalised but can include Vancouver Island and the city of Victoria, the adjoining Lower Mainland and Vancouver, the mountain village of Whistler and the interior Okanagan Valley. We would expect to perform 3 or 4 concerts during this tour.
The accommodation for foreign choirs during both the festival and the Outreach tour is usually on a home stay basis where there are no costs for housing or meals. Hotel accommodation can be arranged for those who desire it but this will entail significant extra cost. We will also have hotel accommodation in Vancouver for 1 or 2 nights post arrival and pre departure.
At the moment we are planning to fly to Vancouver on 1st or 2nd July and travel to Powell River on 3rd July for the festival. We hope to end the Outreach tour in or near Vancouver on 14th July and return to the UK on 16th July.
For those choosing the home stay option the cost should not exceed £1650/person.
For those choosing the hotel option the cost should not exceed £2600/person.
These are estimated costs and cannot be finalised until the final numbers travelling are known.
Because we have to pay a participation fee to the festival organisers and an advance deposit on aircraft seat bookings, a £250 deposit will have to be paid by all tour participants by the end of October 2017.
In order to try and reduce the cost for choristers a number of fund raising efforts are to be made. These will include fund raising concerts, the first of which will be held in Penarth in November, a giant raffle and efforts to obtain outside sponsorship. It is essential that every choir member gives the greatest possible support and assistance in these efforts.
It is intended that the core repertoire for the tour will be the Albert Hall programme plus other pieces well known in Welsh choral circles, thus keeping the learning requirements to a minimum. The tour committee feel that in order to allow new choristers to attain the standards required by CMDC they will need to be members by the end of October 2017.
